Incorporating these restorative poses into your daily routine can help you unwind and recharge after a hectic day.

How restorative poses aid in relaxation

Restorative yoga poses help relax your body and mind by allowing you to slow down and unwind. They involve gentle stretching and supported postures that promote deep relaxation. The poses help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body’s rest and digest response. By practicing restorative poses, you can lower stress hormones, decrease muscle tension, and calm your mind, leading to a sense of peace and relaxation after a hectic day.

My top favorite restorative poses for stress relief

Doing restorative yoga poses can be a great way to unwind after a hectic day. Here are some top poses that can help you relax and ease stress:

Child’s Pose: This pose, also known as Balasana in Sanskrit, involves sitting back on your heels, stretching your arms out in front, and lowering your forehead to the mat. It is a calming and grounding pose that helps to release tension in the back and shoulders. To deepen the stretch, you can walk your hands further out in front of you and focus on breathing deeply into your lower back. Child’s Pose is a great way to relax and unwind, making it an excellent choice for a gentle stretch or to start or end your yoga practice.

Legs Up the Wall: Lie on your back and extend your legs up a wall, forming an L-shape with your body. This relaxing pose can help reduce swelling in the legs and improve circulation. Stay in this position for 5–10 minutes while focusing on deep breathing and relaxation.

Corpse Pose: Also known as Savasana in Sanskrit, is often considered one of the most important yoga poses. It is typically practiced at the end of a yoga session to help relax the body and mind. After a long day it can help lengthen back out your spine among other sections of the body for relief. The pose involves lying flat on the back, legs slightly apart, arms resting by the sides. Savasana helps in reducing stress and promoting a sense of peace and relaxation.

Reclined Bound Angle Pose: Lie on your back, bend your knees, and bring the soles of your feet together, allowing your knees to fall outward in a butterfly shape. You can place yoga blocks or pillows under your knees for support and comfort. This pose is great for opening up the hips and stretching the inner thighs. Take deep breaths and relax in this gentle hip opener.

Crocodile Pose: Also known as Makarasana, is a rejuvenating yoga posture that promotes deep relaxation and restoration of the body. By lying on your stomach with your forehead resting on your stacked hands or a pillow, you can release tension in the spine and promote gentle stretching of the back muscles. This pose encourages deep breathing as you can connect with the feeling of your belly pushing into the earth as you expand your breath.

Try these poses to cultivate calm in mind and by asking tension to release from your body, promoting a sense of relaxation and well-being.

Where and When to Practice

To practice restorative poses, I recommend finding a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed, however the world around you goes on. Yoga teaches us to find the calm within ourselves despite what maybe flowing around us.

Dim the lights or use soft, warm lighting to create a cozy atmosphere. Play some calming music or nature sounds to help you unwind. Consider using aromatherapy with essential oils like lavender or chamomile to enhance relaxation. Arrange comfortable cushions, blankets, or a yoga mat for support as you practice restorative poses. Creating a space that feel safe, comfortable, and supportive is a great way to start.

Sit or lay down in a relaxed position and take a few deep breaths to center yourself. Next, focus on spots of tension in your body, connecting with your breath and on each exhale, slow down the breath and ask the tension in your muscles to go. Hold each pose for 5–15 minutes. Remember to listen to your body and only go as far as is comfortable for you. Practicing restorative poses regularly can help relax both your body and mind after a stressful day allowing you to clear out and prepare for restoration.

Time of day doesn’t truly matter; what you feel inside is the best indicator of when. I recommend doing a couple of poses before bed, focusing on the breath, and working to find rest and recovery. These poses are tools for whenever you need a little extra support; they’re there for you.
